Steven Yeun and Richard Jenkins together in The Humans, an A24 film

We have already said ad nauseam that A24 is the studio of the moment, having a great success at the box office in addition to the fact that some of its productions have come to streaming in recent weeks, it being the turn of The Humans, a film that is available on Filmin from August 26, 2022.

This feature film places us inside a duplex, which is basically a two-story family home, where the Blake family gets together to celebrate Thanksgiving, although nothing goes as planned since an eerie darkness hangs over the buildingtriggering a long list of strange events.

A great mystery and drama thriller

It is curious that for critics this is an almost perfect film (92%) while for viewers it is fairly mediocre (44%); but to tell the truth, we agree that This Tony Award-Winning Play Adaptation Is Worthy of Recognitionalready in addition to being much deeper and with touches of black humor, plays with the idea that the happy family is often nothing more than a simple facade.

Ultimately, this film directed by Stephen Karam is a sample of the set of six dysfunctional people, each of them full of traumas and secrets that enrich the narrative in a uniform way. This idea is shared by Gayle Sequeira of Film Companionwho mentions that “the film acknowledges that knowing someone is also knowing exactly how to hurt them.”

In this regard, Karam mentioned during an interview with A24 that the fact that this is an adaptation represented a challenge because there were need to reinvent some parts of the story; although, in turn, he offered infinite creative possibilities, which is why he was inspired by the films of Edward Yang, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Krzysztof Kieślowski.

Cast of The Humans

Even when there are opinions against the pace of the film, in general there seems to be a common idea, and it is the dazzling work and commitment of the cast in general, who exploit their characters to the maximum in order to have a collective interaction that conveys the feeling of a messy and even chaotic family.

Writer/director Stephen Karam’s feature debut stars Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Beanie Feldstein (American Crime Story), controversial Amy Schumer, Jayne Houdyshell (who appears in the Disney Plus series, Only Murder in the Building) , June Squibb (Summer ’03) and Richard Jenkins, whom we could see in The Shape of Water, a film by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. @worldwide
