The legacy of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ was forever tarnished after stories began to surface last year about the toxic environment that its created Joss Whedon was allegedly perpetuating on the set. Several of his stars publicly accused him of subjecting them to different types of workplace harassment, including his star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The 45-year-old actress, who played Buffy Summers in all seven seasons

of the television classic, spoke out in support of her former co-star Charisma Carpenter when she denounced the series creator for creating a toxic work environment on set. The actress, who played Cordelia Chase, said in 2021 that Whedon frequently threatened to fire her and called her “fat” when she was four months pregnant, in addition to asking her if she planned to terminate the pregnancy.

However, Sarah Michelle prefers to keep her experience to herself because she doesn’t think that coming to terms with the past is going to help her. “I am in a good moment, in which it is easier for me to talk about it. I will never tell my complete story because I don’t get anything out of it. I have said everything I was going to say because nobody wins. Everyone loses”, he assured to The Hollywood Reporter.

Her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. is much less restrained when it comes to recalling the treatment she received during that time: “The things that were forced on her, without any real credit or salary, while she was often the only one doing 15 days hours… And yet, she was still able to deliver that character’s message every week and do it with pride and professionalism.”

Charisma Carpenter’s testimony marked the beginning of a series of allegations that jeopardized Joss Whedon’s career as a feminist writer, responsible for creating strong and independent female characters. Another of its actresses, Michelle Trachtenberg, who began working as Buffy’s sister at just 14 years old, responded to Charisma’s statement by adding that the director was not allowed to be alone with her following a “highly inappropriate” incident about who did not want to give more information.

They weren’t the only ones. Gal Gadot was quick to break his silence to denounce that Joss had suggested on several occasions that he could end his then fledgling career in the movie mecca while they were filming ‘Justice League’, and even his ex-wife described him as “a false feminist “who had also been unfaithful to him.
