Sarah Michelle Gellar was not won over to the idea of the series that NBC wanted to make about the movie “Cruel Intentions”, The Hollywood Reporter noted. As will be remembered, the actress was one of the protagonists of the film, which presented in 1999 a modern and youthful version of the novel “Dangerous Relationships”.
In an interview with The New York Times to promote his new film with Netflix, “Do Revenge”, he commented that the combination of an open network and the concept of the story did not fit well.
“I don’t know, they were crazy times,” said the interpreter. “Nothing against NBC, but ‘Cruel Intentions’ is streaming stuff. On the first day, I was: ‘This doesn’t work. It’s just not a show for broadcast television. And if it’s a space for a string like that, then it’s not my ‘Cruel Intentions’. So I’m actually very grateful,” Sarah Michelle Gellar told the NYT about the decision to cancel the project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fiction would take place 15 years after the events told in the 1999 film. The plot followed Kathryn Marteuil, the character of Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was trying to take control of the Valmont International family business, after the death of his stepbrother Sebastian Valmont, whom he gave life to in the film Ryan Phillipe.
In addition to Gellar and Phillipe, “Cruel Intentions” featured Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, Christine Baranski, Tara Reid and Eric Mabius, among others. The film, directed by Roger Kumble, premiered in Latin America under the title “Sex Games.”
NBC ordered the follow-up series to “Cruel Intentions” in February 2016 and it was shelved in October of that same year. Subsequent attempts to retake it also failed.
Despite this, the MovieWeb portal points out that it is currently preparing another series that seeks to continue the story of “Cruel Intentions”. The site, which cites IMDb TV as a source, said that fiction would take place in Washington and would focus on two stepbrothers who intend to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. That production does not include Sarah Michelle Gellar.
