Review of “Day Shift”, Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg against the vampires | WritingCinema

Saturday, August 20, 2022

Jamie Foxx, who won an Oscar for playing Ray Charles, composes a peculiar action hero named Bud, who seems to have come out of the last century. He drives a beat-up Ford truck, uses his trade as a front pool cleaner, has flashy muscles, and has debt problems with his ex-wife that keep him away from his little daughter. To “get the family back” he must do some “jobs” for the syndicate, an organization for vampire hunters.

The protagonist is a loser in the image of the rest, but a born fighter in his covert activity. His assistant is the inexperienced Seth (Dave Franco) who provides the humorous moments of the story with sequences typical of a buddy movie. The villain is the fearsome vampire Audrey (Karla Souza) and she is accompanied by Diran (Scott Adkins).

At the climax of the film, rapper Snoop Dogg appears composing Big John Elliott, a legendary vampire hunter. A good and hilarious cameo that seals the parodic comic tone of the film. A self-aware humor reinforced with the occasional dialogue about vampire movies that has Bud and Seth weighing in on Twilight (Twilight, 2008) and its sequel.

But Day shift (Day Shift, 2022) is a short-lived action comedy and we could even say, forgettable. It is clumsy in the development of the family drama and the characters are built by stereotypes without being completely charismatic or at least funny. Something that works against him and the spectacular action sequences do not finish compensating.

The martial arts specialist director and stuntman puts all his potential into creating eloquent Jackie Chan-style action choreography. A knowledge focused on the deployment of the action scenes, be they massacres that simulate video games (the fact that they are vampires justifies the excessive violence), or in the chase along the roads of the San Fernando Valley. It is in this scenario that the film works best and its director moves with greater comfort.
