For her new series, “The Thing About Pam”, in which she plays the murderer Pam Hupp, Renée Zellweger appeared transformed on the set, wearing a magnifying prosthesis. A practice that arouses controversy in Hollywood.
Used to physical transformations for the needs of a role, as she has already proven with Bridget Jones and Judy, biopic which earned her an Oscar for Best Actress in 2020 for her performance in the skin of film legend Judy Garland, Renée Zellweger once again appeared unrecognizable a few days ago on the set of her new series, The Thing About Pam.
Destined for the American channel NBC, this six-part mini-series will see Renée Zellweger play Pam Hupp, a woman in her sixties, a former life insurance manager, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder. of Louis Gumpenberger, before being convicted this year of the murder of her friend Betsy Faria, whom she had first tried to put on the back of the latter’s husband, Russ Faria.
A new very strong role for the actress who seems determined to resemble the real Pam Hupp as much as possible since she was seen on the set of the series in New Orleans wearing a magnifying costume and nasal prostheses, as in attest the photos visible below.
After having given of her person on the first films of the Bridget Jones trilogy by forcing herself to a “weight loss diet” in order to gain more than ten kilos, Renée Zellweger has therefore visibly refused to repeat this experience which had earned her crises of panics and that she had ended up publicly regretting.
The actress has thus opted for a “fat suit”, that is to say a magnifying prosthesis, supposed to create an illusion and give the impression that she has really gained several tens of kilos to look like the murderer she plays. in The Thing About Pam.
In recent years, the use of “fat suits” has been controversial for its grossophobic nature. While Gwyneth Paltrow apologized for wearing one in the movie The Extra Large Love, Sarah Paulson, who also donned one of these jumpsuits in American Crime Story Season 3, recently attempted to give her vision of an obviously complicated subject during an interview with the Los Angeles Times :
“It’s complicated for me to talk about it without giving the impression that I’m looking for excuses”, said the one who plays Linda Tripp in Impeachment: American Crime Story. “There is a real controversy about actors wearing fat suits, and it is a legitimate controversy. Grossophobia exists. To pretend otherwise would be dangerous. It is a very important subject to talk about.”.
“But the actors who choose to embark on what could well be the challenge of a lifetime are not, in my opinion, the only ones responsible”, continues Sarah Paulson. “Thinking that the only thing an actor chooses for a particular role can bring is their physical appearance is very simplistic. I want to think that there is something about me that makes me the right person for it. this role. (…) Should I have said no to this role? That is the question “.
There is therefore no doubt that the performance of Renée Zellweger in The Thing About Pam will once again create controversy when the series airs on NBC. For the moment, no date has yet been announced for this adaptation of a true crime podcast which will also be worn by Josh Duhamel, Judy Greer, and Katy Mixon (American Housewife).
