Filming Secrets

From a true story: Gilles de Maistre came across a young boy who lived surrounded by lions on a farm in South Africa. The child did not know that his parents raised felines to make hunting trophies.

Gilles de Maistre appealed to the South African zoologist Kevin Richardson nicknamed “the lion whisperer”. A true international star, he has created a sanctuary for lions who live there independently and interact with them for over twenty years.

Daniah De Villiers moved in at age 11 to live with the lion for three years. They grew up together. “It was impossible to film a story of friendship between a lion and a child… unless a baby lion adopted the child. It is the fruit of three years of work, with three impregnation sessions per week”. Kevin Richardson.

The team considered the lion as an actor and not as an animal to be trained. Thus, he got used to cameras and microphones and was able to do the same things again on a new take.

A film that warns about the hunting of breeding lions: The lion is an increasingly threatened species. Most are destined to be shot by wealthy tourists. The global lion population is estimated at more than 20,000 individuals, according to Paul Funston, director of the Lion program at the NGO Panthera in 2021. A census in 2014 calculated that this figure had fallen by 43% in 21 years.
