A nephew of Oscar-winning Meryl Streep reached a no-jail deal on Wednesday for violent road rage incident in the Hamptons – after prosecutors accused alleged victim of causing “his own injuries In the case.
Charles Harrison Streep, 32, pleaded misconduct in the August 24, 2020 altercation in East Hampton that allegedly left 19-year-old David Peralta-Mera with serious head injuries. He was ordered to pay a fine of $ 250 and a surcharge of $ 125.
Streep – a son of Meryl Streep’s brother Dana Streep and his wife Mary – was initially charged with serious strangulation and assault charges, but those raps were later demoted to misdemeanors.
He and Peralta-Mera, then 18, got into a fight in a Chase Bank parking lot in downtown East Hampton last summer after their cars nearly collided.
Surveillance footage appeared to show Streep, who was driving an Audi convertible, pushing Peralta after getting out of his car and rushing towards him.

One of the men is then lifted into the air by the other – and they both crash to the ground, the video shows.
Suffolk County Deputy District Attorney Patricia Brosco said in court on Wednesday that the video partially proved Peralta-Mera was responsible for her own injuries.
“Peralta, a former high school wrestler, caused his own injuries in this case. It is the determination of the people to consult not only with video, with the medical examiner’s office… but with other consultants with other doctors, ”she said.

Streep’s attorney claimed that the evidence showed Peralta-Mera “suffered a head injury when he grabbed Mr. Streep around his legs, lifted him off the ground in a wrestling move,” held shoulder high, completely perpendicular in the air, then, (like) something you might see in WWF, knocked him to the ground on his back and fell with him, hitting his head at the same time.
“It should be noted that Mr. Streep sustained significant injuries when Mr. Peralta knocked him to the ground, including fractured vertebrae and a concussion,” Weinstein added.
In handing down Streep’s sentence, Judge Steevn Tekulsky agreed, “There is nothing to suggest to me that this is not an appropriate plea. “

Streep, who wore a charcoal suit and tie for the hearing, remained with his face stoned as he walked out of East Hampton Town courthouse with his lawyers, ignoring questions from a Post reporter.
“Today’s court proceedings confirm what we have stated previously – that Mr. Streep was innocent of all criminal charges that had been laid against him,” said defense attorney Andrew J. Weinstein.

Edmond Chakmakian, the lawyer representing Peralta-Mera in his civil case, strongly disagreed with prosecutors over the video of the fight – saying the footage showed the exact opposite.
“The video speaks for itself,” Chakmakian told the Post. ” He [Streep] can clearly be seen dropping David to the ground.
Peralta-Mera “tried to defend himself and was injured while trying to defend himself,” Chakmakian added.

” The [Peralta] didn’t slam him on the body, ”the lawyer said. “He tried to defend himself and came back to Streep after Streep attacked him. “
“He hurt himself when Streep dropped him at the end, or slammed him, whichever way you want to put it. ”
Chakmakian claimed that three eyewitnesses saw Streep “curse and drop David to the ground.”
He said the criminal case would not affect the Peralta-Mera trial, which would continue as planned.
“I have no doubt that Streep did not intend to do to David what he did, but I stand by my statement that his behavior that day was extremely violent and was an obscene display of violence. “Said the lawyer. “It shouldn’t have happened. “
Outside of court, Peralta-Mera has said he hopes to one day get the justice he seeks.
“If the criminal justice system doesn’t judge him, someone will judge him someday, God willing. This is how it’s going to be, ”he said.
