In 2014, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe discovered Anthony Mackie in a brand new role: that of Sam Wilson AKA The Falcon, in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. First sidekick to the superhero played by Chris Evans, he takes on more and more importance over the works.
In 2021 he becomes the hero of his own series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which propels him into the role of Captain America, taking over from Steve Rogers. Anthony Mackie therefore becomes one of Marvel’s most important superheroes and will lead the film Captain America: Brave New World in 2024, but in his mind things should have been different from the start.
” I wanted to be Black Panther”
In a long interview given to the American media Inverse, the actor confided that he thought of becoming Black Panther when he entered the small papers of Marvel. In any case, that was his initial desire: I had contacted Marvel a lot about Black Panther. I wrote them letters. I was trying to find a way for them to do Black Panther. And I wanted to be Black Panther because growing up, I loved Black Panther. »
The American site explains that the studio called Anthony Mackie’s agent and set up a meeting with Nate Moore, a longtime Marvel producer, and the two directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
Of this meeting, the actor remembers: ” I’ll never forget Joe Russo saying to me, ‘Look, we’re making this movie. We want you to be part of it. We can’t say which character you’ll play, or who else will be in it. Would you accept? And that’s all. I was like, ‘You know what, I like you. I will do it. »
Sam Wilson, the past, present and future of Marvel
The film ? It was not Black Pantherbut good Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie then became Sam Wilson, and it was the late Chadwick Boseman who became T’Challa in 2016 in Captain America: Civil War.
