April 2018. In dark rooms, Marvel fans can’t believe it. Thanos, now equipped with the Infinity Gauntlet, just snapped his fingers. One by one, the Avengers crumble to dust, and half of them suddenly vanish.

Four years after the shock conclusion of Infinity War, Elizabeth Olsen, who has played the formidable Wanda Maximoff in the MCU since 2015, returned to this memorable sequence at the microphone of variety :

“I didn’t know I was going to disappear before shooting the scene”she confided.

“They told us that day. We all got into a van where they had some equipment set up to show us a preview. There was Scarlett [Johansson]Chris [Hemsworth]Chadwick [Boseman]Sebastian [Stan]. We were all in this van, and they were like, ‘This is what’s going to happen. You will disappear.’ (…) It was disturbing. We did not know. We thought the movie ended differently.”

The actress also touched on Vision’s death, which happened moments earlier in the film. After being relieved of the Infinity Stone he wore on his forehead, the hero played by Paul Bettany breathed his last. It was Wanda herself who sacrificed her beloved by using her powers to counter Thanos.

The result: a sequence that was a little complicated for the actors to shoot, because it was relatively abstract on the set, but nevertheless decisive.

“Shooting this stuff is very embarrassing, because it’s like the world depends on you. (…)says Elizabeth Olsen, still at the microphone of variety.

“But at the same time, it was heartwarming, because Paul [Bettany] and I supported each other. This is one of the last scenes we shot. I felt very comfortable with him as an actor when we had to improvise a bit. We were trying to find the stage, with the Russos leading us. And then, once it was over, it was a huge relief.”

The most embarrassing, according to the actress, was having to act out invisible powers in public, trying to imagine what it might look like on screen:

“With one hand, you’re energy blocking something. And with the other, you’re ripping that fake thing out of his stitch-covered face. [ndlr : les capteurs nécessaires à la performance capture]. And it’s supposed to be painful and full of emotion.”

However, thanks to the combined talents of the actors and the magic of the special effects, the result on the screen is ultimately very convincing, and the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War has remained in the annals of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
