Marvel: Jeff Bridges talks about the difficulties of filming the first Iron Man movie

Earlier in the year, we returned to the film Iron Man 2 (2010) when we revealed that the film Marvel was originally to adapt this dark story of Tony Starkthe opportunity to return to the character who allowed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (mcu) to take off. And lately it’s Jeff Bridges who shared some anecdotes regarding the production of the very first installment of the cinematic universe of marvel studiosrevealing in passing his feelings about this experience like no other.

a difficult start

After years of collaborating with other companies, Marvel Studios finally decided to produce its own films, starting with the movie Iron Man (2008) by Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. Despite the considerable risks and the simultaneous release of the highly anticipated The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan the very first MCU movie became the unexpected hit of the year, laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most popular franchises of the time.

Since Iron Man, there’s been a lot of talk about it being almost mission impossible for Marvel Studios. Hiring Favreau and Downey Jr. was a huge risk. Despite this, and the fact that the MCU was still unknown, the project managed to attract high-profile stars.. We find in particular Gwyneth Paltrow in the role of Pepper Potts, or even Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane, aka Iron Monger, the big villain of the film. But unlike Paltrow, who would later be found in the MCU, Bridges didn’t continue with Marvel Studios, and apparently, the experience was not very good, at least at first.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fairthe American actor, known in particular for crazyheart (2009) or even True Grit (2010), precisely evoked his most emblematic roles. And regarding Iron ManBridges has nothing but praise for Favreau and Downey Jr. However, he will address some tumultuous aspects of the production, especially concerning the many rewrites of the script.. He will then admit that the resulting uncertainty had driven him mad. But he will eventually manage to change his mind and let himself go, at which point he will really enjoy the process. Here is his comment:

Wow, Jon Favreau man, what a director, what a great filmmaker. It was Marvel’s first venture into filmmaking. We were very lucky to have Jon and Downey, because they’re both great improvisers, and we spent two weeks working on the script and rehearsing together, because we didn’t like the original script and we we thought: “Oh yes, we corrected this and that”. Then, on the first day of filming, Marvel threw away the script we had been working on and said, “No, it’s not good. It has to be like this.” There was then a lot of confusion about our script, about what we were going to say. And we spent hours locked up reviewing the lines […], to explore how we were going to do it. Jon was like, “Oh, I know a writer. Let me see if he has any ideas.” Meanwhile, the team waited in the studio, tapping their feet and wondering, “When can we get started?”.

And it really drove me crazy, until I made a slight adjustment in my head, and that adjustment was, “Jeff, relax. You’re doing a student film at 200 million dollars. Just relax and have fun.” And it worked, because I was able to play with these two incredible artists and do improvisations […]. And for me, it’s still the best Marvel movie. I know I’m biased, of course. But man, I found it to be a wonderful experience.

Jeff Bridges Reflects on Iron Man, Calls it “a $200 Million Student Film” | Den of Geek

It is common knowledge that the achievement of Iron Man was really chaotic. And in reality, Kevin Feige even admitted that choosing Downey Jr. to play Iron Man remains the biggest risk Marvel has taken so far.. Bridges’ story therefore seems quite believable, especially when we know that some improvised scenes even changed the general plot of the film.

One can then easily understand how such an environment could have been destabilizing for an industry veteran such as Bridges., with a production that was visibly far from the usual conditions. That’s probably why the actor keeps praising the talents of Favreau and Downey Jr., who were integral to the rise of the character, and the franchise in general. The fact that the production of the film was chaotic thus makes its success all the more impressive..
