“Blonde”, the film directed by Andrew Dominilk, came to Netflix and it didn’t take long for it to become the most viewed on the platform. Ana de Armas was chosen to play the iconic Marilyn Monroe in a story that is not afraid to expose the darkest passages in her life.
In a conversation with Fotogramas, the actress revealed that making the film was exhausting, hard and stressful. “We shot in 48 days and there was very little budget. Also, Andrew is a perfectionist director and so am I… so it was a nightmare for everyone to work with us,” she expressed.
Why is it so criticized?
The review from Rotten Tomatoes, where it has only 44% approval, criticized that “Blonde” can be difficult to watch while teetering between commenting on exploitation and contributing to it. Also, several fans called the film sexist and misogynistic.

“Art has to create controversy. That is what it is for, to make us think and teach us things that we have not been able or wanted to see. It was impossible to count Marilyn without the sex. Sexuality was what created this character. It was what people asked for: she was the demand, ”answered Ana de Armas in this regard.
For her, it was important to show the sexual abuse because we are still learning how to talk about it, support the victims and make them free to express themselves without fear of repercussions. “I like to think that she is very proud and that she is happy,” she emphasized.
Now aim for the Oscars
Despite the harsh criticism the film received, Ana de Armas’ luminous performance makes it hard to look away. According to Variety, her work was an impossible come true and she is the best Latin option to win the golden statuette at the 2023 Oscars.
The race for the award will not be easy, especially with so many good performers who could be nominated: Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh, Emma Thompson, Olivia Colman and Florence Pugh.

The film is exclusively available on Netflix because it is an original production of his. There are no plans for it to see the light of day in theaters or on another streaming platform.
