Lady Gaga: her great response when accused of being intersex

In 2009, Lady Gaga was a rising star who was becoming known worldwide with hits like Just Dance either PokerFace. At that time, rumors arose on the Internet that she was a “hermaphrodite”, a term used to refer to living beings with the presence of male and female genitalia. Today the term intersex is preferred.

Where did the rumor come from? There was video material of a Lady Gaga performance in August 2009 in which she appeared in a red dress and leaning on a blue motorcycle. At one point where she is leaning against the bike, her underwear can be, and has been (at least by some), mistaken for a vestigial penis, according to reports Snoopes .

How did Lady Gaga respond?

The artist was questioned about it in several interviews, and in all of them she responded in a very ingenious way. In an interview in Australia, when she was asked on a radio station, “Where are we now with the small penis problem, Lady Gaga?” she replied, “My little vagina is very offended. I’m not offended, my vagina is offended.”

In another interview, the remembered journalist Barbara Walters asked her if she cared about the rumor to which Gaga replied: “No. Not really. At first it was very strange and everyone said: ‘That’s really a great story! ‘ But in a sense, I play myself in a very androgynous way, and I love androgyny.”

Another interview with Anderson Cooper recently resurfaced where he asked Gaga why she hadn’t cleared up the humor about her genitals to which she replied: “Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care and neither do I.”

Since then, Gaga has become a great icon for the LGBTIQ+ community for talking about accepting us as we are and shutting up those who think about other people’s privacy.
