Joker 2: Margot Robbie finally speaks out about Lady Gaga being the new Harley Quinn

Until now, the face of Harley Quinn in the cinema was that of Margot Robbie. But things will soon change since Lady Gaga will play the famous supervillain in Joker: Madness for two, the sequel to the film directed by Todd Phillips. Margot Robbie recently gave her thoughts on this change.

Harley Quinn: several actresses for the same character

Harley Quinn has a rather special journey. In effect, it was created in 1992 for the needs of the series Batman the Animated Series. The character meets a monster success. So much so that comic book writers decide to integrate Harley Quinn into the DC universe. This unique anti-heroine was therefore created for the needs of a cartoon, before joining the DC Comics stable.

Quickly, she becomes a central character in the DC universe. Highly appreciated by readers, it was adapted for the cinema for the very first time in 2016 in Suicide Squad. For the occasion, she is embodied by Margot Robbie. The actress will resume (for the moment) twice the role of the pretty mercenary, in Birds of Prey and in The Suicide Squad. His future in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is currently uncertain. No project has been announced with the actress, and Margot Robbie does not yet know if she will return to the role.

Joker: Madness for two

But a new film version of Harley Quinn will soon be presented to the public. In effect, the character will join the Joker in Joker: Madness for two. Expected on October 2, 2024, the feature film, which follows Joker, will present the singer and actress Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. The feature film is still directed by Todd Phillips while Joaquin Phoenix is ​​obviously back as the Prince of Crime. The rest of the cast currently consists of Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener.

In a recent interview with MTV NewsMargot Robbie gave her opinion on the upcoming appearance of Lady Gaga in the skin of Harley Quinn. The actress welcomed the news warmlyand even finds it great that several actresses can embody the same character at the same time:

It makes me happy, because I said from the start that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, like Macbeth or Batman, who always goes from being a great actor to being a other. It’s a bit as if several people could make his Batman, or his Macbeth. I feel like, in rare cases, it’s the same for female characters. There is Queen Elizabeth for example. I was like, “Wow! Cate Blanchett made Queen Elizabeth I. Now it’s my turn.” It’s such an honor to have built a strong enough foundation that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actresses can try to play. And I think she’ll do something amazing with it.
