Jessica Alba reveals how she protected herself from ‘Hollywood predators’

Revealed in the 2000s with “Dark Angel” and “Sin City”, Jessica Alba says she has long adopted a masculine attitude to avoid being the target of many predators in Hollywood when she was between 12 and 26 years old.

The career of Jessica Alba started when she was a teenager. In 1994, for example, she appeared in a few episodes of the series The Incredible Powers of Alex. Then, in 1999, then aged 18, she co-starred with Devon Sawa in the delirious horror comedy The hand that kills. But it is on television that the actress revealed herself, thanks to the two seasons of DarkAngel (2000-2002), created by James Cameron.

After that, the actress imposed herself on the big screen, marking the spirits in SinCity (2005) before playing The Invisible Woman twice in Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel (2007). Jessica Alba has thus distinguished herself in different genres with comedies and action films, but also horrific proposals (The Eye) and thrillers, such as the excellent The Killer Inside Me (2010).

In recent years, Jessica Alba has nevertheless put a little aside her acting profession. In 2011, she created The Honest Company which markets ecological products and clothing. Another entrepreneurial career that works very well for her and makes her more and more rare on the sets.

Male energy to deal with predators

Recently, Jessica Alba was a guest on the show Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?. During the interview (via variety), she mentioned a specific element of her career, namely the picture of sex symbol which was created around it. Chris Wallace asking her what she thought about being objectified in the media when she was still a young adult from the time of DarkAngel.

I think I understood that I had to help sell the product. I understood that it was a business strategy. So I was able to distance myself from that. But I guess you can’t change what others think or don’t think of you. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with owning up to your sexuality.

She nevertheless specifies that the image she returned did not correspond not at all who she really wasthat she was quite bad about herself and was logically “nervous about it“. Then, Jessica Alba explains that she adopted the opposite attitude to avoid “predators in hollywood which, according to her, were many when she had between 12 and 26 years old. For this she would have “forged an armor of masculinity” and did not hesitate to swear to play the tough.

At the time, I felt like I had to forge myself an armor of masculinity, to give off a masculine energy so as not to be prey. (…) I was really tough. I swore like a carter. I tried to make myself as unavailable as possible so that I wouldn’t be taken advantage of.

It was only later that Jessica Alba would have taken over “control of (one’s) femininity“, after becoming mother in 2008. She then gave birth to two more children in 2011 and 2017.
