Conan : a remake that fails in all areas

For many years now, the trend is towards remakes, and this in all areas: musical covers (although we don’t call it “remakes”), more or less old video games brought up to date, and films or series that do the same. Many studios and directors have understood the interest of the thing: a story, a universe and characters already exist, so all you have to do is make a few changes and you’re done! Results : a reduced workload, for a project that has a good chance of succeeding because systematically repeating successful works.

Disney has become accustomed to this practice with these live-action remakes of cult cartoons from the last century (Mulan, The Lion King…). On a completely different note, director Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) embarked on a remake project of Conan the Barbarian, 1982 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan, a young barbarian seeking revenge for the deaths of his murdered parents. If the original feature film was not free from defects, it will have marked the spectators and remains an important work in the filmography of the actor.

This time, it’s Jason Momoa who is called to play the title role, but the performance of the actor does nothing about it: the feature film is a huge flop at the box office and does not even make it possible to reimburse the 90 million dollars invested in its production. Conan is also destroyed by critics and the public. Not resentful, Jason Momoa even goes in their direction literally saying this movie is a turd. And it is true that in terms of quality, the contrast with the first season of Game Of Thrones, released the same year and in which the actor also plays, is obvious.

A very good experience, for a result

It was during a recent interview with our colleagues from QG that Jason Momoa spoke about his experience while filming the remake of Conanbut also on his feelings about this film with hindsight. And the least we can say is that his words are quite virulent.

Far from tender words from the actor, who visibly resents the teams responsible for post-production since according to him, the shooting itself did not seem at all to indicate that the final result would be so poor. Fortunately for him, we cannot frankly say that his acting career was impacted by the critical and commercial failure of Conan : soon, he will be on the bill ofAquaman 2 as well as Fast and Furious X, in which he will play a particularly eccentric villain.
