Jacqueline LORAIN has joined her dear Michel: gastronomy loses one of its most elegant ambassadors

Coming to Joigny, convalescing to get some fresh air, the pretty Parisian Jacqueline never left the city of Maillotins, having met love there, in the person of the young cook Michel LORAIN. From now on, Michel and Jacqueline will be one…

JOIGNY: After their marriage in 1958, the young couple took over “La Côte Saint-Jacques”, following Marie and Louis, Michel’s parents. From their union will be born Jean-Michel, then his sister, Catherine. In this good roadside inn, you can enjoy excellent traditional cuisine. The menu even specifies: steak tartare with English sauce, prepared to your liking by Mme LORAIN! The restaurant is always full, and many Peugeot 404s, Simca 1300s and other Citroën DS park along the then RN6.

But in 1966, the opening of the first section of the A 6 between Paris and Avallon (without speed limit!), drastically reduced road traffic on the legendary national road. For the establishment, the account is no longer there, with a turnover divided by two. The LORAINs are not the type to give up. They even go to England, to contact London tour operators. Michel, the chef-builder, also thinks that to get motorists off the A6, it would be ingenious to refine his cuisine, making it more gourmet.

A refined palace in the art of sommellerie…

At the heart of these great years of the Michelin guide of the time, Michel and his brigade will fight between two trips to the Rungis market to find the best products there. In 1971, “La Côte Saint-Jacques” won its first star, and doubled the lead five years later. But, Michel wants more for his hometown. So, always faithfully assisted by Jacqueline, he will give himself the means. Throughout this “pneumatic” progression, Jacqueline took on the sommellerie, an essentially male world until then. It has a place of choice, more of a precursor and is recognized as a refined palate during tastings!

Three Michelin stars: “La Côte Saint-Jacques” is in the firmament…

In 1986, recently joined by Jean-Michel, “La Côte Saint-Jacques” by Jacqueline and Michel LORAIN won the coveted three Michelin stars (establishment worth the trip according to the guide!) which for thirty years will shine along this RN 6 that they will have served so much. At the end of the last century, the parents elegantly handed over the succession to Jean-Michel, their son. Joigny, thanks to the LORAIN family, is known throughout the world today…
This elegant lady, loved by her children and grandchildren, is going to join her dear Michel, who died last year. Goodbye Madam, French gastronomy and the city of Joigny can legitimately say thank you.
