Iron Man: Jeff Bridges says he went “crazy” during filming

Jeff Bridges facing Robert Downey Jr. in “Iron Man”, this is the confrontation by which the sprawling MCU launched in 2008. A great experience for Jeff Bridges, who however remembers an extremely complicated…

Jeff Bridges versus Robert Downey Jr.

Jeff Bridges is a legend of American cinema, who first appeared on the big screen in 1951, in an extra role when he was only two years old. The Canardeur, tron, The Big Lebowski, crazyheart, True Grit, to name a few, Jeff Bridges has collaborated with the greatest and has an experience of an unusual magnitude. But giant as he is, when he arrives on the high-risk set ofIron Man in March 2007, directed by Jon Favreau, he has a hard time getting used to it

In this movie, he is Obadiah Stane, aka Iron Monger, Iron Man’s enemy. An unprecedented and acclaimed performance, for what remains to this day the first and one of the most beautiful successes of the MCU. To get there and open the most popular film franchise currently, Iron Man was the subject of a very chaotic production, and Jeff Bridges returned to this one in an interview granted to Vanity Fair.

Jeff Bridges: ‘Just relax and have a good time’

Before getting into the writing problems that initially greatly disturbed him, Jeff Bridges made praise from director and lead actor Robert Downey Jr.. Implying that without them, the fate ofIron Man would have been quite different.

It was Marvel’s first venture into film production. And they were lucky to have Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr., because they’re great improvisers. We spent several weeks working on the script and rehearsing together, because the original version didn’t suit us, and we thought we had corrected things. But on the first day of filming, Marvel brushed off our script, “No, it’s not good. It’s got to be this and that.” We didn’t really know what the script was, what we were going to say or not.

We spent hours in one of our trailers going over the dialogues, knowing who was doing what, trying to figure out how to do it. Jon would then say, “I know a screenwriter. He may have some ideas…”, and meanwhile the team was on set, impatiently wondering “when are we going to finally start? And it drove me crazy, until I put it in perspective, “Jeff, just relax. It’s a 200 million dollar college movie. Just relax and take some good time”.

It worked, because from there I started to invent with these two incredible artists, and that’s what we did. And, as far as I can tell, it’s the best Marvel movie. I’m biased, I know. But frankly, I remember a great experience.

A unique appearance at the dawn of the MCU

Since Iron Man, his character has only reappeared via archive footage in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and we can cherish these latest images. Indeed, it seems more than unlikely that the 79-year-old actor will eventually return to the MCU. Actor in only one MCU film, today it sounds like an anomaly, given the choral aspect and the recurrence of the appearances of the characters of the Marvel recipe. But, nevertheless, what a beautiful anomaly!
