‘I’m Still Canadian’: Keanu Reeves Jokes About Plans To Become A US Citizen On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on October 6, Kimmel noted that while Keanu Reeves, 58, has been a resident of the country for more than three decades, Reeves still holds Canadian citizenship. To which ‘The Matrix’ actor also said: “I’m still Canadian” and would like to become a US citizen.

Recounting his trip to Hollywood, Reeves said, “I came to Hollywood when I was 20 years old. I drove my car. Yes, I have lived here since 1985. To which Kimmel quickly interrupted, saying, “And yet, technically, you’re not a US citizen,” prompting Reeves to say, “No man, I’m still Canadian.” To this, Kimmel further said, “You are a Canadian citizen and always will be, but aren’t you interested in being a US citizen? “Yeah, absolutely, yeah, man, why not?” Reeves replied. Kimmel then joked, “Well, why didn’t the president call and say, ‘Hey, we’d love to sign you up?'” “I’ll send him some BRZRKR,” Reeves added, referring to his new comic. Kimmel said as she pulled some papers from his desk, “I have the paperwork here. If you want to fill it, we have it. We even got you a pen. [with an American flag design]. It’s very patriotic.”

Taking the conversation further, Kimmel then turns to his partner, Guillermo Rodriguez, who is Mexican-American, and asks, “Was it difficult, Guillermo?” Rodríguez responded by saying, “No, it’s very easy. You should do it!” Kimmel asked, “William, did you fill all this out? This is a lot of stuff to complete.” “Yes, I did, Jimmy,” Rodriguez replied.

Kimmel also suggested that Reeves marry him, adding that he had already discussed it with his wife. The actor jokingly replied, “But you are married. You’d be a criminal, you’d be on the run, we should be on the run, Jimmy. That’s a no. Kimmel said, “I know, but I told him that we may have to make some amendments to our Constitution.” The late-night talk show host also shared that he would host a welcoming ceremony on the show once Reeves obtains US citizenship.
