On February 3, ‘Almas en pena de Inisherin’, one of the winners at the last Venice festival, premieres. SensaCine offers you an exclusive interview with the team.
The couple that British filmmaker Martin McDonagh refers to when he says “people love the couple they make” is the one created by actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. And it is not a trivial statement, since the tandem starred in one of the director’s great titles, Hiding in Bruges. McDonagh also presents a new film after the success achieved with Three ads outsidewinner of three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell.
‘Inisherin’s lost souls’: two men with the same destiny
Five years later he returns, with the same leading couple, in Banshees by Inisherina film “about two friends who are not so much anymore and how this affects the community where they live”, in the words of one of the protagonists, Colin Farrell.
“I wanted the return of the tandem to be in a very different story from the one elaborated in Hiding in Bruges“, indicates the director. If in this one, both gave life to a couple of hired killers who must live together in a European city, in this time we witness the separation of Pádraic and Colm, lifelong friends. Colm, however, will not cease in his efforts to recover his friendship, even if all this ends up causing dire consequences.
Banshees by Inisherin has the endorsement of the award at a prestigious festival: it premiered at the last Venice Festival and there won the Best Actor Award for Colin Farrell and Best Screenplay. “I have the greatest admiration for Colin. I think his instincts and his integrity are terrific.” These words are poured by his co-star, the Irish actor Brendan Gleeson, whom we have recently been able to see in Macbeth’s tragedy by Joel Coen.
Another of the stars of the film, Kerry Condon, also has flattery words for the actor: “Colin was perfect for the role of Pádraic because he is still very youthful in his mannerisms and expressions.”
It is Farrell’s own turn to speak:
I can’t be very objective when it comes to working with Brendan. I adore him, admire him and respect him very much, I feel true love for him
What is Colm’s character like? Brendan Gleeson himself has the answer: “It’s very intense and very melancholic: I think that in their worst moments, the melancholy of one is offset by the joy of the other. Faced with Pádraic’s naiveté, Colm has quite sophisticated thinking.” On the island, Colm is revered, or so Kerry Condon feels at least: “You get the feeling that there is a certain reverence for Colm on the island, and it’s what Same as with Brendan, in general. You respect him so much.”
Who will the public identify with? A question that throws the film. “Do you understand the hard line Colm is taking, breaking up with his friend, or do you empathize with the good person who is heartbroken?” Director Martin McDonagh transfers to the screen something that we have all suffered firsthand: being the friend who is left behind or the one who makes the difficult decision to cut his losses. The viewer can draw their own conclusions next February 3, the premiere date of Banshees by Inisherinone of the calls to be the best films of 2023 in theaters in Spain.
