House Of The Dragon: 10 Best Rhys Ifans Roles, According To IMDb | Pretty Reel

Rhys Ifans currently plays Otto Hightower in the new Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. Ifans is an accomplished Welsh actor who often portrays humorous and offbeat characters.

He was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for Richard Curtis’ Notting Hill (with whom he also collaborated on The Boat That Rocked), and won a BAFTA TV Award for Not Only But Always. Ifans is no stranger to projects with lots of special effects, having played villain The Lizard in both The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

10 Notting Hill (1999) – 7.2

Streaming on Amazon Prime

Ifans plays one of his best known roles as Spike, the eccentric Welsh roommate of William Thacker (Hugh Grant) in this romantic comedy written by Richard Curtis.

Spike is a very memorable role for Ifans. With his various T-shirts with rude sayings on them and wearing scuba gear around the house, Ifans makes Spike’s bizarre antics completely natural. Despite his wacky nature, he is a very supportive friend to William and helps him in his relationship with Anna Scott (Julia Roberts).

9 The Boat That Rocked (2009) – 7.3

Streaming to Apple TV

Ifans plays rival DJ Gavin in this Richard Curtis-directed comedy-drama about a group of rogue DJs in 1960s Britain.

Ifans shows off his acting skills as the quirky DJ Gavin. He and The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman of Boogie Nights) take their rivalry too far by playing a dangerous game of “chicken” and injuring themselves in the process. Gavin is also a ladies man and has women who adore his voice.

8 Not Only But Always (2004) – 7.4

Ifans plays real-life comedian Peter Cook in this biopic of the turbulent comedy partnership between Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (Aidan McArdle).

Ifans convincingly portrays the real life of Peter Cook, showing all his mannerisms. It really plays to the heart of the relationship between Cook and Moore, which was a love-hate relationship. Ifans exposes Peter Cook’s many flaws and isn’t afraid to show the darker side of their relationship as well as the positives.

7 Trial and Punishment (1997-2009) – 7.6

Broadcast on Acorn TV

Ifans plays prime suspect Michael Dunn in the first episode of Trial & Retribution, which focuses on the investigation into the murder of five-year-old girl Julie Harris.

Ifan’s Michael Dunn is a complicated character – himself a victim of childhood abuse who, unfortunately, also abuses children. A role like this is difficult due to his clearly evil actions, but with the addition of a tragic past, it requires even more skill. Ifan gives a suitably sinister performance as Michael Dunn.

6 Annual retention (2006-2007) – 7.7

Ifans stars as himself in this comedy meta-series about Welsh comedian Rob Brydon (known for the comedy series Gavin and Stacey) doing a panel.

Ifans is all for letting Brydon ridicule his past roles. Ifans is a very effective straight man for Brydon’s ridiculous antics, such as quoting him lines and, at one point, drunkenly kissing his cheek. He also happens to introduce himself speaking fluent Welsh unlike Brydon who struggles with this.

5 Daddy’s Death (1998) – 7.7

Ifans plays both dad and Uncle Dai in this short film about a young boy (Paul Jones) in 1960s Wales who refuses to believe his uncle isn’t his dead father.

Ifans shows his skill in playing two distinct roles. Although the dialogue is sparse, Ifans delivers a touching performance opposite the grieving young boy (Paul Jones). There is both a real sense of melancholy and hope between them.

4 Mr. Nobody (2009) – 7.8

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Ifans plays Nemo’s father in this sci-fi fantasy, which stars Jared Leto as Nemo, about a boy’s alternate decisions about whether to go with his mother or father.

Ifans beautifully plays all the different realities as part of the ensemble. The complex plot includes a branching off if Nemo stays with his father or his mother, and things get even more complicated by branching off even further after these decisions.

3 Primary (2012-2019) – 7.9

Streaming on Hulu

Ifans plays Sherlock’s (Jonny Lee Miller) brother, Mycroft, in this modern-day series based on Sherlock Holmes set primarily in New York City.

In this adaptation, Mycroft has a tragic past of having had cancer and needing a bone marrow transplant. He has a very strained relationship with Sherlock and didn’t even tell him he needed a bone marrow transplant. Despite this, he loves his brother. Mycroft of Ifans is unusual in that he is a restorer and MI-6 informant rather than a highly influential member of the British government.

2 Oasis: The Importance of Being Inactive (2005) – 8.1

Available on YouTube

Ifans plays Billy Fisher in this black and white music video from the 1960s.

Ifans attracts attention as Billy Fisher, a funeral home worker in a small northern town. He’s on screen all the time dancing and lip-synching with Oasis. It’s a highly engaged performance that fits right in with the stylized homage to 1960s British kitchen sink dramas that the video tries to convey.

1 Spider-Man: No Homecoming (2021) – 8.3

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Ifans reprized his role as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in the Spider-Man: No Way Home crossover.

Ifans portrays his character only in lizard form this time around. His portrayal in this film is different from how his character was portrayed in The Amazing Spider-Man. While in this film Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard was played in a more tragic and serious way, in this film he is much more of a hammy villain – which is more in line with the slightly lighter MCU Spider-verse universe. Man.
