One of the essential novels of romantic literature is faithfully but ambitiously made into a film, with a young but visionary director and an incredible cast that is up to the challenge. The adaptation of the well-known novel by Charlotte Brontë was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and released in 2011, to great acclaim. Its cast features stellar names including Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, and Sally Hawkins. The film is available on HBO Max for a limited time, as January 15 is the last day it will be available on the platform.
The story of jane eyre takes place in the 19th century. The young woman played by Wasikowska suddenly flees Thornfield Hall, a large and isolated estate in which she works as a governess to Adéle Varens, a girl who is in the custody of the melancholic Edward Rochester, played by Fassbender.

Rochester’s imposing residence and commanding presence have tested his stamina. He has nowhere to go, so he accepts the help offered by the priest St. John Rivers and his family. While Jane Eyre recuperates in her new residence, she spends time recall the tumultuous events that forced her to escape while wondering if the past has really happened.
Brönte’s original novel has been the subject of multiple film adaptations, which date back to the days of silent movies. There have been versions with Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles, with George C. Scott, with Anna Paquin, Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt. A really fresh approach was needed for the 2011 remake, and that was provided by Fukunaga who showed his genius despite only having one (modest) movie to his credit.

The director, who would later grow by giving the impressive first season of true detective or the luxurious no time to die, manages to reflect the emotional and spiritual strength of the novel without going too modern. Gothic details emerge in a turbulent romance that has a lot to do with a ghost story although in the film not a single spirit appears.
As if that were not enough, Wasikowska and Fassbender are perfect for their respective roles. Especially the second as Mr. Rochester, creating a sensual and magnetic aura around the character that becomes the key for the film to captivate you. Because he does it with such force, making this one of the best pieces of period drama of this century.
