GI Joe, the awakening of Cobra: Channing Tatum does not like the film

Blockbuster featuring characters inspired by the famous Hasbro brand figurines, “GI Joe, the awakening of the Cobra” saw Channing Tatum play the leading roles. However, the star admitted a few years later that he was not a huge fan of the film.

GI Joe, the awakening of the Cobra : from the world of toys to cinema

Produced by the famous American company Hasbro, G.I. Joe is a series of plastic action figures that represent several branches of the US military. Released during the Kennedy period (and in the midst of the Cold War), this line of toys became immensely popular, even managing to diversify into other areas. Thus in the 80s, comic book adaptations were published by Marvel Comics. In this same period, there are also animated series G.I. Joenot to mention video game adaptations.

It was not until the end of the 2000s that a film adaptation arrived in large theaters with GI Joe, the awakening of the Cobra. The pitch more or less takes up the concept of these toys. We therefore follow the agents of the elite team known as GI Joe who lead a fierce fight against a mysterious terrorist organization called Cobra. The cast of the film is 5 stars, between rising stars and experienced actors: Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, Lee Byung-hun, Ray Park, Sienna Miller, Jonathan Pryce, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Saïd Taghmaoui. Note that the film directed by Stephen Sommers has several actors who collaborated with him on his most famous saga: The Mummy. We therefore find Arnold Vosloo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kevin J. O’Connor and even a cameo appearance by Brendan Fraser himself!

Whether GI Joe, the awakening of the Cobra will receive a more than mixed critical response (6 Razzie Award nominations, all the same), it will nevertheless manage to obtain sufficiently large profits to become a true cinema franchise. Therefore, we will find GI Joe: Conspiracy in 2013 and Snake Eyes in 2021.

When Channing Tatum unzip the film

In the 2000s, Channing Tatum was still a promising Hollywood actor. Indeed, he revealed himself in 2006 with the dance film sexy dancing (which would later become a series of blockbuster films). However, it was in 2009 that the actor really took off by appearing in three films: Fighting, Public Enemies and especially GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra, in which he plays the lead role. Unquestionably, this blockbuster allows him to attract the eye of the major Hollywood studios, in addition to gaining greater notoriety. However, in full promotion of Magic Mike XXL in 2015, the star admitted that he did not carry this film in his heart.

Thus, in an interview on the radio SiriusXMthe actor lets go:

I’ll be honest, I hated this movie. I hate it. I was forced to do it… After Coach Carterthey signed me to a three-movie deal… And since I was a young actor, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this sounds amazing, I’m going to do this!'”

We recall that this is not the first time that the actor has proven that he does not have his tongue in his pocket when it comes to talking about his own films. We remember that Channing Tatum had also not been very complimentary towards Jupiter: the fate of the universe. However, although he found the script of the film bad, he admits to being a fan of the character of Conrad ‘Duke’ Hauser (although he originally wanted to play Snake Eyes). Above all, despite his hatred of the first film, Channing Tatum appeared again in GI Joe: Conspiracy. As his stardom grew between the two films, Paramount even pushed back the film’s release by several months so that the actor could shoot his scenes. For a man who hates GI Joe, the awakening of the Cobrathe approach is strange.
