Everything Everywhere, All At Once Co-Director Talks Swapping Jackie Chan For Michelle Yeoh

One of the most talked about movies of the year is A24’s sleeper hit Everything everywhere all at once. Although Marvel Studios has explored its own multiverse with much larger budgets through films like Spider-Man: No Coming Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessthere was something about Everything everywhere all at once, with a budget of less than 15 million dollars, which really touched the viewers. The film grossed over $100 million to become A24’s highest-grossing film at the box office, and best of all, it received universal praise, with a new score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

But Everything everywhere all at once could have been a very different movie if the original casting choice for the title character could have made the movie. In a new story about the making of the film at THR, filmmakers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert explained how Jackie Chan was originally envisioned to play the protagonist with michelle yeo in a supporting role as his wife. Although Chan was unavailable for the role, the duo realized the potential they had with Yeoh to make the story work, eventually moving her character from Evelyn Wang into the lead. Ke Huy Quan was later cast in a supporting role as Evelyn’s husband, Waymond.

“You never know with the chemistry of storytelling how things are going to go down,” Kwan says of how well everything went with the casting change. “The character swapping made it more personal, which gave us a rich experience to soak up the story. Suddenly it became much easier to write and to imagine.

Michelle Yeoh wanted to be challenged playing Evelyn Wang

Michelle Yeoh also talked about what it was like to play the role of the protagonist in such a unique story. Playing Evelyn and her many variations was unlike anything she had done before in her career. She saw the opportunity as a challenge, and she realized it would definitely be after checking out the script.

“What I need is to be challenged, to have directors look at me in a different way,” Yeoh noted. “Over the years, my [characters] were strong, held together. So when I read the script, I was like, ‘Whoa, what?’ »

Other big names were added to the cast, joining Quan as strong supporting cast members. This includes James Hong, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, Jenny Slate, and Harry Shum Jr. However the film was made, it would seem most viewers would agree that it couldn’t have been better without having this cast in place.
