“Empire of Light”: Olivia Colman stars in a story about human connection and movie magic in the trailer for the new Sam Mendes film

Searchlight Pictures shared a new trailer this week for Empire of Light, the director’s next film sam mendes who has been behind memorable films like American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Skyfall Y 1917, among other. The film is set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, and tells a story about human connection and movie magic. Discussing his inspiration for the film, Mendes said: “For me, it was the late ’70s and early ’80s: the music, movies and pop culture of that period generally shaped what I I was. It was a period of great political turmoil in the UK, with a lot of very inflammatory racial politics, but at the same time, an incredible period for music and culture in general: very creative, very politicized, very energized.”

Here’s the synopsis: “The Empire is the kind of theater you don’t see very often anymore, framed by bright lights and a beautiful marquee, graciously inviting everyone to its red velvet seats. Hillary (Olivia Colman) is in charge of opening the cinema every morning and overseeing a overflowing food stall. Meanwhile, her manager (Colin Firth) calls her into her office from time to time to ask her for illicit favors. It’s a grim routine that Hilary reluctantly repeats, but all of her coworkers acknowledge that she’s much calmer since she returned to work after a long absence. When Stephen (Michael Ward) arrives as an eager new employee, the two form a quick, if seemingly unlikely, connection. Hilary hides a troubled past, struggling to control her mental health, while Stephen, a young black man, confronts the prevailing racism in Britain in the 1980s. Both, injured by attacks beyond their will, find in the other a an escape route and a safe harbor, but their relationship, like Empire cinema itself, cannot last forever, and soon the couple will have to face the reality of their different futures.
