Dan Aykroyd thinks Ghostbusters 4, 5, 6 should feature an original squad

If there is one person who has always been behind the ghost hunters franchise, it’s star and writer Dan Aykroyd, and after Ghostbusters: the afterlife blew box office expectations when it arrived in November, there would obviously be questions about whether we will see the original team again in the future. As Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson now step through the years, they’ve proven they can still put on a show with their late arrival in the Legacy Sequel and it seems no one should rule out the possibility of another outing or three for the team right away as Aykroyd says he has an idea for Ghost Hunters 4, 5 and 6.

While the first two ghost hunters movies created one of the most iconic franchises of the 1980s, a third film slated for the early 1990s got stuck in development hell for so long that Sony ultimately decided that the only thing they could do was reboot the series with a whole new cast. This decision resulted in the Ghostbusters 2016 film, and rather than recalling too much how it was received, we’ll just say that five years later ghost hunters fans got to see the team they actually wanted to see ghosts on screens again in Ghostbusters: the afterlife.

While the new addition to the franchise featured an unexpected appearance of Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler in ghost form, which, considering the actor’s passing a few years ago, was both a tribute to the ‘actor and a very well done plot, it seems Aykroyd’s ideas revolve in part around the death of his own character, or maybe more. But then again, he also suggests that it might be best to use all three of the original cast while they’re still alive.

“I would like to die. I think Bill and I should be killed in the next one. Or, maybe we’re just waiting. Why not use the Living Ghostbusters – Ernie, Billy and I – for four, five, and six? Go until we’re gone. Then there will be time for tributes. Death is going to take us soon enough, ”said Aykroyd during her appearance on USA Today.

Ghostbusters: the afterlife Certainly sets up the possibility of a sequel, with a post-credit scene seeing Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore return to the New York Fire Station with ECTO-1, as he explains how he’ll always be a Ghostbuster. In the final seconds, the camera heads towards the containment unit in the basement where a red light flashes and we go black.

A sequel has yet to be given the nod, but director Jason Reitman, who has taken over the reins from his father Ivan, has certainly expressed interest in continuing the franchise, teasing that another ghost hunters the sequel could feature Vigo the Carpathians, and Ernie Hudson has said in interviews that he would be more than happy to return in a sequel. Fans got what they wanted once, so who’s to say it won’t happen again?
