Ghostbusters: the afterlife recently released an international trailer, which doubled down on the nostalgic feel the film brings as we were immersed in Gozer’s mythology from the original 1984 comedic horror film that kicked off the franchise. With an extended look at the return of the Terror Dogs, more clips of the mini-men Stay Puft Marshmallow, and some new footage from Gozer’s Underground Temple, the many comments that the movie is delivering on fan service seem to be pretty accurate so far. This latest trailer added an Easter egg that created space for a theory on the role. Paul Rudd plays in the proceedings, and again everything relates to the events of the original ghost hunters film.
In the last moments of the Ghostbusters: the afterlife International trailer, we see a brief shot of Carrie Coon’s Callie, the mother of two of the film’s young protagonists, Phoebe and Trevor – played by Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard respectively – and daughter of the late Dr Egon Spengler. In the blink of an eye and you miss the moment, Callie is pictured on the floor, apparently outside the old house left to the family by Egon, looking quite horrified by something. What is more important than what she looks at is what she is wearing, as the sequined number and neckline is somewhat reminiscent of the dress worn by Dana Barrett from Sigourney Weaver when she became Gozer’s maid known as that gate keeper.
While the top or dress, whatever it is, might only be a reminder for the fun of it, its inclusion might well hint at something more sinister, which is where Rudd’s character comes in. As was vaguely suggested in the first trailer, Paul Rudd’s Mr. Grooberson not only comes face to face with an army of mini Marshmallow Men, but also with one of the Terror Dogs, who chases him through. a supermarket and at night. If the film follows the rules of Ghostbusters, the Terror Dogs only stalk one person each; the Gatekeeper and the Keymaster. These two possessed hosts then play an important role in opening the portal that allows Gozer to enter the world. And now you see where it’s going.
As the Terror Dog in the clips seems determined to catch Grooberson, this would suggest that he has a goal for him and that goal would play the Keymaster role like Rick Moranis’ Louis Tully did in the original. If you consider the two characters side by side, from what has been seen so far, there are more than a few similarities that don’t make it too complicated to get on board. This would give Rudd’s character a purpose other than just being a teacher with knowledge of the Ghostbusters, and potentially having Callie as the gatekeeper would invoke a personal connection to the main children and Egon’s legacy.
It was recently confirmed that Olivia Wilde will take on the role of Gozer the Gozarian, and since we’ve already seen a brief flash of the iconic villain’s “flattop” emerging from a pit in the trailer, this would suggest that the Gatekeeper and Keymaster have been successfully reunited to allow him to free himself from the spirit world again. We have a little less than a month left before Ghostbusters: the afterlife arrives in theaters on November 17, when everything is finally revealed and we’ll see the old and new Ghostbusters take on their biggest villain in a 35-plus final showdown.
