How did the project come about?

I was involved with that for five, six years. But I feel like this is your whole life, that you’ve been working to do this. You know, the wisdom of how to deal with adversity. The absolute love of people dealing with pain and suffering in their lives with optimism and hope. Not break with life, et cetera, and I was delighted. I have so much gratitude to David (Russell) for inviting me on this epic journey.

How did this new collaboration with the director come about?

Like any great filmmaker, David is very unique. He is very special. He has his own perspective on him. It’s what makes great filmmakers fascinating and he’s one of the greats. And I love that we met and that he invites me to come back. Robert De Niro has done more, this is the fourth of his (project) of him, I have done three. But every time we work together, we have more days on the calendar. And for this I was really grateful, that David invited me for the whole trip… From sitting down to eat and write on napkins and being gasped by real events in history that we had never heard of, listening to music, watching documentaries, read books, invent these characters. It was a joy from start to finish.

What is your Amsterdam?

I think my Amsterdam is anything when you have to obsess in such a healthy way with something, that you can’t think of anything else. And I get it in big environments. I get it from working with David and all these guys. I get that from wonderful cinematic experiences. I get that from my family. And I get it from motorcycles.
