Leonardo DiCaprio still wants to make his eco-friendly superhero movie adapted from the 90s series Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

Starring in a superhero movie was never a career plan for Leonardo DiCaprio. On the contrary, the actor even recommended Timothée Chalamet to refrain from doing so. However, Leonardo DiCaprio does not hate the genre. Indeed, for several years he has wanted to produce a feature film devoted to the ecological superhero Captain Planet, the protagonist of an animated series from the 90s. And if we can doubt for the moment that the project will materialize, some people close to Leonardo DiCaprio believe that sooner or later he will come to fruition, both the interpreter of titanic is seduced by the license.

“I have to tell you, I love Captain Planet”

Indeed, Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Devotion), associated for a few years also with this possible project, confided in EntertainmentTonight and revealed that he and Leonardo DiCaprio are still excited about making a Captain Planet movie:

“I know DiCaprio is super passionate about this project. And so am I. I think it could be awesome… I want it to work. I would love to play this superhero. »

As a reminder, Leonardo DiCaprio had obtained the authorization to transpose the animated series in the form of a feature film and he had asked Glen Powell to draft a scenario. And it would therefore seem that the two stooges still hope to bring the exploits of this original combat superhero to the screen. Unfortunately, the matter is much more complex because, as Glen Powell then points out, it will be necessary to take into account the position of Warner Bros Discovery, holder of the rights to the franchise.

For those who have never seen an episode of the adventures of the superman, Captain Planet and the Planeteers tells the story of five teenagers recruited by the goddess Gaia to protect the earth against polluters. Equipped with a magic ring, the five young people can now summon Captain Planet, ersatz of Superman, able to help them in their fight. The series broadcast between 1990 and 1996 in the United States met with some success and had no less than six seasons.

However, despite its friendly demeanor and despite its welcome message, Captain Planet and the Planeteers is not necessarily known for its quality. That’s why we can doubt the relevance of such an adaptation (well, afterwards, a solid script and a talented director can transcend the original material).

Anyway, it is useless to draw hasty conclusions for the moment, because it will be necessary to wait (just like the main interested parties) for the favorable winds of Hollywood so that the feature film finally sees the light of day. By then DiCaprio will surely have starred in Martin Scorsese’s next film, Killers of the Flower Moon, which rumors already announce for Cannes in May 2023. Case to follow.
