It’s on the notes of You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen that the news trailer of Bones and All opens and takes us into what promises to be an atypical road movie. With this new feature film, Luca Guadagnino seems to cross his two previous films by mixing the solar romantic drama of Call Me By Your Name and the horror of Suspiria.

Adapted from a novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis, Bones and All tells the story of Maren, a young woman on the American roads in search of her mother, and her encounter with Lee, another adrift teenager. The two young people quickly fall madly in love with each other, but also discover a common taste for human flesh.

Bones and All thus announces itself as a road movie at once luminous and dark, imbued with adolescent romance and bursts of raw violence. The trailer shots show a visually worked film to showcase this character couple and the vast American settings.

But behind this visual beauty, savagery is never far away and a few squirts of blood filmed from a low angle already announce the horrific scenes that should punctuate the feature film.

For the occasion, Luca Guadagnino findsve Timothée Chalamet whose career has grown since their previous collaboration with Call Me By Your Name.

And after touring with Greta Gerwig (lady bird and The Daughters of Doctor March), Woody Allen (A rainy day in New York), Wes Anderson (The French Dispatch) or even Denis Villeneuve (Dunes), the young actor continues to vary his repertoire, here playing the role of Lee.

At his side, the Canadian Taylor Russell (Escape Room, waves) performs Maren. Chloe Sevigny (The Dead Don’t Die) and Mark Rylance (Oscar winner for his role in The Bridge of Spies) round out the cast.

And if it is the voice of Leonard Cohen that resonates on the images of the film, the soundtrack will be composed by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, regular collaborators of David Fincher on The Social Network, Millennium: The Men Who Didn’t Love Women or Gone Girl.

In competition at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where he won both the Silver Lion for Best Director and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Most Promising Actor for Taylor Russell, Bones and All will be released in French theaters on November 23, 2022.
