Bernie Mac Biopic is going to John Legends production company

A Bernie Mac biopic is in the works at John Legend’s production company, Get Lifted. Among the most hilarious comedians of his time, Mac was deeply missed by both fans and those who knew him almost 13 years after his untimely death. News of the film about the late actor and comedian was revealed by Legend’s production partner Mike Jackson at the 2021 Tribeca Festival.

“We just teamed up with the Bernie Mac estate to cover the Bernie Mac story,” Jackson said explicitly during a panel discussion. The producer added that the new deal, which he was “very enthusiastic about”, still has the ink drying on the contract as it just happened that day. Jackson also revealed that even Legend was not yet aware of his status until he was revealed to everyone in the Tribeca room.

“Do you watch the latest news here,” John legend mentionned.

The producers of Get Lifted explained that the project is intended to be a scripted feature film about the life and career of Mac. As it’s still in its early stages, there aren’t any additional details about the film or who Bernie might play. Either way, the project marks a full moment for Legend, who actually played a role in Soul Men – one of Mac’s last films released after his death in 2008. In the film, Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson played former backing vocalists who reunite for a reunion concert following the death of their band’s lead singer, played by Legend.

” The Men of the soul reunion that you all wanted to see, ”Legend told Tribeca, before pointing out how Bernie liked to make everyone laugh between takes, adding,“ He really had joy in lighting people’s faces with laughter. “

“It was beautifully done,” Legend also said of The Bernie Mac Show, the comedian’s sitcom from the early 2000s. “His humor was always daring but he still had so much heart at the same time. You could tell he was a family man. You could tell he liked the people he was talking about. “

A Chicago resident since forever, Bernie Mac first made a name for himself performing his unique brand of stand-up comedy. He rose to prominence playing in the stand-up movie The original kings of comedy with Steve Harvey, DL Hughley and Cedric the Entertainer. For The Bernie Mac Show, the comedian was nominated for two Emmy Awards for Best Leading Actor. He has also appeared in a variety of films including Eleven from the ocean, charlie’s angels, Transformers, Bad santa claus, Old dogs, and Guess who. Mac died at the age of 50 in 2008 after suffering from sarcoidosis for three years.

It is not yet known when the untitled Bernie Mac biopic will be released by Get Lifted. For now, fans can spend some time speculating on which actor might be the best person to play Bernie in the film, although everyone could agree that there is no one else like him. . With the field involved and with such huge Legend and Jackson fans, the biopic should hopefully make him proud. This news comes to us from the Hollywood Reporter.
