On the occasion of the promotion of his new film Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder was the guest of MTV in the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. During the interview, the director revealed the name of the actor who could have played the part of Batman if Ben Affleck had refused.
A surprising choice of “plan B”
While Christian Bale had hung up his cape and mask less than a year after the film’s release The Dark Knight Rises, it was announced that Ben Affleck would reprise the role of Batman on the occasion of the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. What if things hadn’t worked out with Ben Affleck, the director, Zack Snyder, had planned a replacement to play the Dark Knight of Gotham City.
Josh Horowitz of MTV hosted Zack Snyder on his “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to talk about his latest film, Army of the Dead, and his career as a filmmaker as a whole. One of the questions addressed to the director concerned his back-up plan if Ben Affleck hadn’t accepted the role. Zack Snyder replied that he would have chosen Belgian actor Matthias Shoenaerts.
“He never did any trials in the costume, but I had done a bunch of models with him because Ben was hesitating. And I don’t blame him. Everyone should hesitate when you are asked: “Do you want to play Batman?” “
Choosing Matthias Schoenaerts to play Batman would have entirely changed the film and its reception. And most certainly would catapulted the actor to world fame. He would also have been the most “unknown” actor to play Batman. In fact, at the time, the actor only appeared in the credits of The Danish Girl.
Moreover, Schoenaerts, who was in his thirties at the time, was not not very comfortable with the idea of playing the masked vigilante of Gotham, claiming that he felt too young.
Matthias Schoenaerts is currently in the movie poster Sons of Philadelphia, a black thriller on the turmoil of a man after the murder of his sister.
