Night Walk, a modern-day Romeo and Juliet between East and West has landed at Grindstone/Lionsgate for North America.
Mickey Rourke plays Gary, a neo-Nazi leader with complete control over what happens in a gang-ravaged prison. The film will be distributed by Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Night Walk is written and directed by Aziz Tazi, who is on Forbes Africa’s list of “30 Under 30.”
Frank is a Western journalist visiting the Middle East, where his girlfriend Sarah lives. After a tragic incident leading to Sarah’s death, Frank is wrongfully imprisoned by corrupt police and, under the direction of the prison’s leader (Mickey Rourke) and the protection of his Muslim cellmate (La Fouine), he uncovers political machinations from the highest ranks of the US government in its quest for justice.
The film also stars Oscar-nominated actor Eric Roberts, Sarah Alami, Ricco Ross, Richard Tyson, Louis Mandylor and Patrick Kilpatrick.
The film was shot between Los Angeles and five cities in Morocco. Aziz Tazi thus directed the first Moroccan film in history to be distributed in Hollywood.
Of working with Tazi, Rourke told Piers Morgan, “it was a really great experience.” In an interview on Good Morning Britain, the Golden Globe- and BAFTA-winning actor hailed “the enthusiasm of this guy who was only 28” and said of Tazi: “He doesn’t wasn’t terrified of working with me, he was just very enthusiastic about working with me.
“Night Walk debuted at the 2019 Moscow International Film Festival to strong reviews; leading Russian media magazine Kinoreporter describing it as “a breath of fresh air”. Tazi also won the award for “Best Screenplay and Rourke for “Best Supporting Actor” at the 2019 Prague Film Festival.
Aziz Tazi, Tatyana Bulgakova and Mostapha Mellouk produced the film. Abdelouahhab Tazi, Maria Zenati, Mehdi Belhaj, Gato Scatena and Josh Chewerda also co-produced it with Ivana Nguyen and Alex Cooray. The film is slated for release in the spring of 2021.
