[Télé/Cinéma] With American sniper », Clint Eastwood made an intense film on the war in Iraq, which describes the life of Chris Kyle, famous within the US army during the campaign ” desert storm “. He was a sniper in the Navy Seals. Having repeatedly saved his fellow fighters, he was nicknamed ” The legend “. OUR OPINION (***) : After ” Memoirs of our fathers ” and ” Letters from Iwo Jima » (2005 and 2006) both by Clint Eastwood, then « Minesweepers (2008) by Kathryn Bigelow, the great Clint evokes these elite soldiers who are little talked about: those who are responsible for shooting perfection at distant enemy targets, sparing their companions, or those who detect and carry out mine removal. A strong and terrible film about war and its psychological consequences. To see Thursday, October 20 on TF1 Series Movies -9:00 p.m.

THE STORY

Eastwood made the choice of weapons: to show the real, without pathos, and the exceptional character of a man who, fulfilling his duty, must kill the enemy, coldly. After September 11, 2001, war was declared, the United States intensified their fight against the Taliban. The comparison with Vietnam would not be fair because there, there was an ideological war, it was necessary to defeat communism, which Americans dread, among the Vietnamese. Iraq or Afghanistan is a war of civilization, of Western culture. Bin Laden attacked them on their soil, the Americans retaliated, like Europe, France, which also intervened in Afghanistan and Mali by sending troops and arms.

OUR OPINION (***)

With American snipers », Eastwood describes from his autobiography the life of Chris Kyle, a young American, strictly brought up, wanting to be exemplary as a soldier. With subtlety, he instills in his demonstration the doubt that sometimes comes to him and the legitimacy of his actions when he leaves. The combat scenes are then more of a war report than a fiction film. And at each of his leaves, back with his family, he experiences a real trauma, too, because of what he does once he returns there.

The director has the skill, the foresight necessary to make a film about a man who has become a hero in his country, and about the psychological consequences that inevitably occur. He never seeks to legitimize this war in Iraq, he paints the portrait of a young soldier, armed with his courage and his certainties, which crumble as the story unfolds.

It’s intelligent, intense cinema, with bradley cooper in his biggest and best role. Even Steven Spielberg expressed his desire to make this biopic on Chris Kyle but gave it up because of a budget that was not big enough, according to him. “American snipers” is one of Clint Eastwood’s most beautiful films, the most detailed, which makes you think long, long after.
