Matt Damon may have shown his interest in playing under the direction of Ridley Scott in “Alone on Mars” and having the support of the film crew, the Fox studio preferred another actor: Channing Tatum.
Matt Damon not good enough ?! This is what the Fox studio thought when choosing the star for the film adaptation of the novel. Alone on Mars. Its author Andy Weir told CinemaBlend that the studio wanted a completely different actor to play astronaut Mark Watney, forced to survive on Mars.
“When Matt Damon showed his interest, we were like ‘yeah, great.’ Keep in mind that in Alone on Mars I had no say in it. My only job was to cash my check. [Mais] the producers and Ridley were like “oh yeah, that works.”
But the studio was pushing for a whole different actor to land the role: Channing Tatum. Weir remembers this disagreement:
I couldn’t imagine myself [Tatum dans le rôle]. He’s a beautiful man, but I didn’t see him playing this super smart guy. I’m sure Channing Tatum is smart, but he’s not the kind of character he’s used to playing. Either he plays the beautiful, or the badass, or both.
Channing Tatum will appreciate … or not. In the meantime, at the time, he left to shoot under the direction of Quentin Tarantino (Les Huit salopards) and the Coen brothers (Ave, César!), While it was Matt Damon who landed the role of Alone on Mars, and his performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Ridley Scott and Damon have since reunited Alone on Mars since they shot (somehow despite the pandemic) the period film The Last Duel, at least part of which takes place in France. There he rubbed shoulders with Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer and Harriet Walter. The film will be released on October 13 in French theaters.
