Did Deadpool save his skin with a simple lost bet? Hollywood superstar Ryan Reynolds, interpreter of the crossed out superhero of the Marvel franchise, recently shared on his social networks a prevention video on colon cancer screening.

All in humor, the husband of actress Blake Lively released the video of her colonoscopy following a lost bet with her best friend, actor Rob McEhlenney. After buying a Welsh football club together, the two friends then made a bet. If Rob managed to learn Welsh, Ryan Reynolds agreed to perform a colonoscopy. At 45, the actor therefore follows the recommendations of the health authorities, who encourage first screenings around this age.
“Screening saves lives…”
The medical examination consists of exploring one of the most intimate parts of the body, to identify possible lesions or affections. A humorous pledge, of which Ryan Reynolds filmed the entire procedure. His arrival at the hospital, his meeting with the hospital staff… as well as the announcement of the result of the colonoscopy by the gastroenterologist in charge of the operation.
Dr. Lapook then explains that this simple routine check possibly saved the actor’s life. Doctors spotted a polyp, a growth on the wall of his intestine, which they were able to remove. “We just halted its progression into a possible cancerous tumor”, explains the specialist. “You see, screening, that’s what it’s for, it saves lives…”

Kicking colorectal cancer ass
His best friend, Rob McEhlenney, also performed a colonoscopy in stride. Result: not one, but three polyps removed ! After asking the doctor how to optimize the prevention of colorectal cancer, he encourages the two actors, as well as the thousands of viewers of this video, to get tested.
“If you are 45 or older, ask your doctor for a colonoscopy”, concludes the preventive sport, carried out in partnership with the Alliance against colorectal cancer. And at the same time, “help Rob and Ryan kick colon cancer ass.”
Third most common cancer, behind prostate and breast, colorectal cancer is responsible for more than 17,000 deaths per year in France. Yet, when diagnosed early, it heals within nine out of ten cases.
In 60-80% of cases of colorectal cancer, the starting point is a polyp. It is a benign growth but can slowly evolve into a cancerous tumor. Since March 1, 2022, it is now possible for any eligible person invited to organized colorectal cancer screening to receive a free home screening test. This test consists of a simple stool sample, completely painless.
When to do a colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is only done when the swab test diagnoses a suspicion of cancer. Contrary to tenacious received ideas, it’s not painfulsince the colonoscopy is performed under general anesthesia.
Certainly, it is not glamorous, but essential! Everyone is welcome to do so from the age of 45and every two years.
