$220 million: why The Flash cost more than Wonder Woman?

With a $220 million budget, “The Flash” cost more than “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Black Adam,” and stands as one of DC Studios’ most expensive projects.

Is Flash stronger than Wonder Woman or Black Adam? If the question can be debated with fans, in terms of powers, the fastest man in the world is the one who will have benefited from the greatest means for his first feature film at the cinema.

In an interview with production designer Paul Austerberry, Oscar winner in 2018 for The Shape of Water, CBC announces a budget of approximately $220 million (excluding marketing costs) for Andy Muschietti’s DC film. It is therefore more than Wonder Woman 1984 (200 million) or Black Adam (190 million, then 260 following reshoots).

A colossal amount that we owe in particular to the many special effects, both to represent the speed of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) and to make Supergirl (Sasha Calle) fly. But also to the decorations.

Michael Keaton’s famous Batmobile had to be transported to the filming location by Warner, while the Batwing was rebuilt and improved, and the BatCave was built in the studio where the 1989 version was based on illusions of optics and painting on glass.

THE FASTEST MAN IN THE BRAKED WORLD

And then there was a surprise guest called Covid-19. Which has impacted the entire film industry, from studios to theaters. While some jumped on the first available slot (Tenet by Christopher Nolan) or releases were sacrificed with a rapid arrival on streaming platforms (Wonder Woman 1984 and all Warner films from 2021, except Dune), others preferred to wait.

As the aptly named Dying can wait, Daniel Craig’s last James Bond, Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7. Or The Flash, which was always intended for cinemas: “We’re building these things and designing this movie for the big screen”says Paul Austerberry. “[The Flash] is a cinematic experience.”

When you find out your film’s budget

However, postponing the release of a film is expensive. But maybe that’s the price you have to pay to make the cinematic experience work. And that of The Flash will begin in France on June 14, with an important film for the future of DC Studios, financially and narratively.

Because this story, in which the hero alters the past and upsets the present, can help James Gunn and Peter Safran to reboot the DC universe on the small and big screen. And the reception given to The Flash will undoubtedly depend on the direction taken.
